Gloucester Girls v Woking Girls U10 - Saturday 21st March 2009

After the snow storms of the previous year, the weather turned out beautifully this time.  There was not a cloud in the sky as the Woking Team took to the field

The pitches had been marked out shorter and a great deal narrower then Woking were used to and this was to have a dramatic impact on our expansive style of play.

Game1:   Gloucester A v Woking A 0-0

Hannah Garnett (g), Jasmine Mitchell, Bethany (Biff) Norman-Walker (c), Odette Roberts, Katie Southgate, Valli McAdam and Lucy Hill

The A Team kicked off for the first of four 10 minute games.   It was taking time to adjust to the size of the pitch as long balls went from penalty area to penalty area.  Lucy was unlucky when her shot hit the Cross Bar.   Gloucester favoured the Route One method with a succession of long balls bouncing into our penalty area which Hannah dealt with confidently.

Substitutions saw Bethany Easterman and Alice Curr replace Valli and Katie.  Jasmine impressed the vociferous away supporters with her strong defending and fast running.   Elizabeth replaced Odette as Woking started to find their way and the attacks started to have some effect.  Meanwhile the Woking defence had identified the Gloucester No.6 as a threat and were dealing with it.   Gloucester ’s Goalkeeper had a good game and time ran out for us as it finished 0-0

Game 2:  Gloucester B v Woking B 1-0

Biff Norman-Walker (g), Louisa Bloomfield (c), Lorna Muggeridge, Emily Collett, Katrina Francis, Jessica Clayton, Lucy Chapman

3 on for 15    7 on for17   16 on for 10

Gloucester adapted to the small pitch much quicker then Woking and shot just over with a long range effort.   Woking started to play as a team and there was some excellent running off the ball.  Working forced a corner but nothing came of it.

Rebecca Smithers, Lena Stroem and Jenna Dunnigan replaced Jessica, Lucy and Lorna.

Play continued with end to end attacks.  Rebecca Smithers defended strongly, providing inspiration for others.  As time ticked by Gloucester forced another corner.  The ball came out and the Gloucester player dribbled into the area and from close range shot at Biff who blocked it but the rebound found its may into the net.   Woking went looking to equalise but, once again, time was against us. Gloucester 1 Woking 0

Game 3 Gloucester A v Woking A 0-0

Hannah (g), Jasmine, Odette, Elizabeth , Katie, Valli and Alice

Hannah was to be called upon many times in this game and rose to the occasion.  Biff, Lucy and Bethany on for Katie, Jasmine and Lorna.  End to end attacks were to be the format again.   Gloucester hit the post and then Hannah saved brilliantly from point blank range.   Woking countered and forced a corner, taken short by Biff, who then tried to lob the goalie but the ball wouldn’t come down.  Katie replaced Bethany .  Katie sent in a long throw which was picked up by Odette who shot just wide.  Lucy should great skill with a surging run down the right but her cross was not met by a Woking player. Full Time 0- 0

Game 4 Gloucester B v Woking B 0-0

Lucy (g) Rebecca, Lena, Bethany , Lorna, Jessica and Louisa

The management’s choice of Lucy in goal appeared about as sensible as asking a Year 6 to look after a sweet shop; how wrong the crowd were to be.  Gloucester were attacking in numbers and had belief that the game was all theirs.  Jessica was ferocious in defence and Lucy was fantastic in goal making numerous excellent saves. This seemed to inspire Woking who started to play far more cohesively.  Hannah on the left was starting to find her shooting feet.

Katrina, Emily and Lucy on for Lorna, Jenna and Jessica.

Gloucester were peppering the Woking goal but Lucy kept on saving.  Woking broke out with a rare attack but couldn’t get a short on Target.  Emily remained strong in defence.  Whilst Woking mounted more attacks, Gloucester threatened on the counter attacks but Woking ’s defence held firm.
